Il y repr\u00e9sente la famille des Pectinid\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Cette esp\u00e8ce est rencontr\u00e9e dans la partie basse de la zone intertidale, alternativement couverte et d\u00e9couverte par la mar\u00e9e, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 une profondeur de 150 m\u00e8tres environ. Elle affectionne particuli\u00e8rement les profondeurs comprises entre 20 et 50 m\u00e8tres.<br \/>\nElle fr\u00e9quente les fonds meubles, de sable ou de gravier mais plus rarement de vase.<\/p>\n<p> &nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>La Coquille Saint-Jacques est ais\u00e9ment identifi\u00e9e aux caract\u00e9ristiques de sa coquille.<\/p>\n<p>Son diam\u00e8tre est de l&rsquo;ordre de 100 \u00e0 150 mm.<\/p>\n<p>Elle est constitu\u00e9e de deux valves de formes diff\u00e9rentes, et est en cons\u00e9quence qualifi\u00e9e d&rsquo;in\u00e9quivalve. En l&rsquo;occurrence, la valve gauche est plate alors que la valve droite est creuse, l&rsquo;animal se tenant le plus souvent valve gauche orient\u00e9e vers le haut et valve droite du c\u00f4t\u00e9 du fond.<br \/>\nLes valves sont en revanche sym\u00e9triques et dites \u00e9quilat\u00e9rales. Elles poss\u00e8dent un plan de sym\u00e9trie de part et d&rsquo;autre duquel les deux moiti\u00e9s sont identiques et l&rsquo;image l&rsquo;une de l&rsquo;autre dans un miroir. Elles pr\u00e9sentent en particulier deux expansions lat\u00e9rales au niveau de la charni\u00e8re, appel\u00e9es oreilles, semblables l&rsquo;une \u00e0 l&rsquo;autre.<\/p>\n<p>Des c\u00f4tes \u00e9paisses rayonnent depuis le sommet de la coquille. Au nombre d&rsquo;une quinzaine environ, elles sont de forme arrondie.<br \/>\nDes stries d&rsquo;accroissement concentriques sont \u00e9galement visibles, marquant la croissance de la coquille.<\/p>\n<p>La face externe de la valve gauche est de couleur rose clair \u00e0 brun rouge, alors que la face interne de la valve droite est claire, jaun\u00e2tre ou brun\u00e2tre, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement macul\u00e9e de taches ou orn\u00e9e de stries fonc\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>La valve gauche est souvent un support de fixation pour d&rsquo;autres organismes, algues ou animaux comme les Bryozoaires, qualifi\u00e9s d&rsquo;\u00e9pibiontes.<\/p>\n<p> &nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l&rsquo;instar des autres Mollusques bivalves, la Coquille Saint-Jacques se nourrit des particules en suspension dans l&rsquo;eau de mer composant le plancton.<\/p>\n<p>Elle effectue une filtration de l&rsquo;eau de mer \u00e0 travers ses branchies, retenant les particules alimentaires appartenant notamment au phytoplancton mais aussi des bact\u00e9ries.<\/p>\n<p>Le courant d&rsquo;eau traversant les branchies est g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 par le battement des cils qui les recouvrent, de m\u00eame que la d\u00e9viation des particules en suspension. Celles-ci se trouvent agglom\u00e9r\u00e9es dans un mucus avant d&rsquo;\u00eatre achemin\u00e9es vers la bouche.
